PCTE Student wins laurels in weightlifting

Gaurav Kumar, MBA-First year student of Punjab College of Technical Education, Ludhiana has bagged silver medal in the junior 82.5 kg weight class at the National Bench Press Power lifting Championships representing Punjab Team. These Chamionships were held at JRD Tata Sports complex, Jamshedpur on 16th March 2010. Indian Powerlifting Federation (IPF) general secretary Subrata Dutta graced the function and 300 lifters, including 42 internationals, showed their might during the three-day proceedings.

This Championship was organized by Indian Power lifting Federation, recognized by Indian Olympic Association. Top international lifters from 25 states across the country assembled in the city for the National Bench-press Power lifting Championship. Performance of the participants in this event will serve as the basis for their selection to the Indian team for the Asian and World Bench-press Championship, stated Dr. KN.S. Kang, Director General, PCTE Group of Institutions.

Gaurav Kumar won second place in 82.5 kg league. There were 22 participants from across the country in his league. Gaurav was jubilant for his achievement and said that he is practicing for the last five years and has won many prizes and gold medals in Punjab State power lifting competitions. Previously, He was selected for junior Asian Championship under 18 but he was unable to participate at that time. He was of the opinion that youngsters today should have a passion for this game. As, through weightlifting you start maintaining a healthy lifestyle, this aggravates your personality and you elude bad habits like drinking or smoking.

Dr. K.N.S. Kang, while congratulating Gaurav said that these types of sports and games rejuvenate the students by making them physically and mentally strong. These act as morale booster for the students when they win the competitions organized at national or international level. Winning these type of championships not only helps the students to avail various opportunities at national level but also at international level. I think young generation should develop zeal for these type of games and sports.
